Hindu Nationalism, Music, and Embodiment in Marathi Rashtriya Kirtan

A partir d'une recherche de terrain realisee a la fin des annees 1990 au Maharashtra, l'A. montre comment la pratique du kīrtan rāshtrīya - un genre expressif utilisant le chant et la parole afin d'associer la devotion et le nationalisme - a eloigne le discours nationaliste indien du secularisme pour l'integrer a un nationalisme hindou. Il montre comment les gens ordinaires, par leur participation au kīrtan rāshtrīya, pratiquent et propagent cette philosophie politique a travers la musique, la performance scenique, et la religion. Il centre son analyse sur un kīrtan rāshtrīya execute par Sudhatai Dhamankar dans le centre de pelerinage de Pandharpūr et mobilisant notamment un saint et un nationaliste. Il montre comment, a travers le chant extatique, la participation du public et l'incorporation du sentiment national provoquent une fusion des identites des participants et du divin, et une re-creation du nationalisme hindou a travers la performance scenique. Dans sa representation, Sudhatai Dhamankar manipule les frontieres entre le religieux et le politique afin de s'opposer a la promotion de structures democratiques
