This exploratory pilot study examined the family dog's reflected appraisal role in perceived self-concept development. Twenty-two male and female preadolescent dog owners participated in the study and completed three instruments. The results revealed a statistically significant relationship between perceived self-concept and five affective dimensions of the preadolescent/dog dyad. The results tentatively suggest that the family dog has a role in reflected appraisal similar to that of the best friend
