Demographic implications of prehispanic settlement pattern in the Andes. The case of Alto Chicana Valley, Peru. Analysis of the archaeological data was utilized to estimate the size of the population of the Yuraccama tradition during the period of its maximun development in the Alto Chicama Valley, Peru. Comparing the results with ecological ressources of the valley it was found that an overpopulation had accured there. Certain specific characteristics of subsistence and settlement patterns were probably due to demographic pressure. An overpopulation had presumably occured during the second half of the Late Intermediate Period and there after the population size had sistematically decreased until the great demographic depression of the colonial times
