The child, mankind and the gods : story of a struggle for life. A tzeltal community prayer for childbirth in Conçue, Chiapas Highlands, Mexico. The foetus must strive for survival, in the same way man does in life : thereby repeating unrelentingly the condition of his ancestors. It is with them and by the prayers of the chabajom - the keeper of ancient and holy words - that the new born will foil the snares and dangers of the evil forces which, in a merciless battle, will do all to destroy him. The mother and the chabajom, exhausted by exertion, and the anxious community will await impatiently the outcome of this cosmic fight, into which we know that the sun and moon will not hesitate in disguising themselves as saints, to help the delivery of the tiny tzeltal who is to life
