Resumo

Although fully evolved phonetic writing systems were never achieved by the pre-Hispanic civilizations of western Mesoamerica, sophisticated systems of essentially pictographic communication, with some phonetic elements in name and place signs, were developed. Recorded in bark paper and vellum screenfolds and other formats, these systems continued to be employed well into the post-Hispanic period. A sizable number of these colonial pictorials have survived, some of the most important of which are in the Aubin-Goupil collection. Donated to the Bibliothèque nationale in 1898, most of the native tradition pictorials in this collection have been reproduced and studied, the history of which is reviewed and discussed.
