International migration and its consequences in the Central Rif (Morocco). Mohamed LAZAAR The development of international labor migration in the Central Rif is a relatively recent phenomenon. The time-concentrated volume of the departures recorded from the 1960s onwards is merely a societal response to the continually worsening crisis affecting the Rif countryside. The active participation in international migratory currents of a highly substantial portion of the active population has entailed economic, demographic, and space-related changes. Field investigations carried out in the province of Al-Hoceima have demonstrated the extent to which the whole area is in a way dependant upon sizable transfers of money earned by immigrants. Unfortunately, these funds are primarily invested not in productive sectors, but rather in housing construction. Such forms of channelling of investments, especially in small-scale administrative centers, in the last few years have led to a movement of micro-urbanization. However, due to the peripheral character of this region in Morocco 's economic space, the productive transfers of these immigrants are diverted towards the urbanized areas of the Atlantic coast
