Resumo

This article analyzes the portrait of a young Bororo boy taken by the Salesian missionary, Father Pedro D’Aste, in 1912, and published in the missionary journal, A Voz de Cuiabá. The article argues that the photograph, which was intended to illustrate the “civilizing” work of the mission, can be read as a complex document that reveals the tensions and contradictions inherent in the colonial encounter. By examining the context in which the photograph was produced and circulated, the article shows how indigenous subjects were represented and how these representations were used to justify colonial domination. The article also explores the ways in which indigenous people resisted and subverted these representations. Through a close reading of the photograph and its accompanying text, the article offers a nuanced understanding of the colonial encounter and its impact on indigenous peoples.
