Este artigo parte de uma experiência de terreno num contexto psicoterapêutico (Serviço de Psicoterapia Comportamental, Hospital Júlio de Matos, Lisboa) no qual um conjunto de ex-combatentes das guerras coloniais portuguesas diagnosticados com a desordem de stress pós-traumático redescreve as suas experiências de guerra e, neste processo, atribui sentidos e inteligibilidade ao seu percurso de vida. O autor mostra como este trabalho de redescrição e de reconstituição da memória é realizado, na prática, com o apoio e a persuasão dos terapeutas, sustentando-se numa matriz vocabular e em módulos narrativos com implicações morais, históricas e políticas só parcialmente investigadas
