En excavaciones realizadas en el clásico sitio AZ-70, cementerio San Miguel de Azapa, se lograron registrar los rasgos constructivos de un túmulo y el sustrato ceremonial de tales monumentos. Con estas evidencias se propone una interpretación alternativa de la Fase Alto Ramírez (600 a.C.- año 0) en el valle de Azapa, caracterizando a estas construcciones monumentales como importantes componentes ideológicos de modificación del paisaje y de representación del nuevo orden social de estas incipientes sociedades sedentarias y hortícolas
