Resumo

A core assumption behind the public procurement schemes for sakprosa (non-fiction) in Norway is that literary sakprosa plays a crucial role in ensuring the open and informed public discourse that Article 100 of the Norwegian Constitution mandates the state to facilitate. Simultaneously, we are aware that reading patterns and the structures of public discourse are undergoing changes. In this article, we conduct a case study of Inga Strümke's Maskiner som tenker (Machines that think) (2023), in terms of its significance for public debate and collective knowledge development. The case has been selected due to the book's remarkable reach, in addition to its high critical acclaim. Our investigation is based on a qualitative approach, positing that non-fiction circulates widely within an ecology of platforms and sub-publics. Consequently, we conduct interviews with informants who have been involved either in the publication or in the use of the book across different sectors. This is combined with examples from media coverage and the author's promotional activities. Together, these elements allow us to map how a book like Maskiner som tenker is influential across a broad spectrum of areas and enhance our understanding of the circulation of sakprosa in society based on a comprehensive conception of circulation, rather than mere readership figures.
