Resumo

In an essayistic tone, the concept of 'literary non-fiction' is explored with a focus on the relationship between form and content. Based on Bakhtin's notion of 'language,' the literary and the factual are assessed as two languages that together create a hybrid form in literary non-fiction. The literary aspect can be hybridising in itself, especially when characters in the text engage in dialogue, thereby pointing beyond the text to various 'languages' as they are practised in reality. 'Stylisation' refers to the author's work in making the languages within the text credible. Brinch draws on theories from literary non-fiction and philosophers such as Sartre and Han to shed light on how literary non-fiction, both in a textual and material sense, opens up particular processes of cognition. The article includes examples from Thomas Hylland Eriksen's non-fiction book Det umistelige (The Indispensable) (2024) to demonstrate how literary non-fiction can combine the literary and the factual without losing factual crediability. It is suggested that the concept of 'literary non-fiction' can be enriched by incorporating writing and reading practices into the considerations of the literary and the factual, as well as form and content.
