Resumo
Peter H. Smith's "Pueblo en Vilo: Microhistoria de San José de Gracia" examines the social and economic transformation of the small Mexican town of San José de Gracia from the late nineteenth century through the Mexican Revolution and into the 1930s. Using a microhistorical approach, Smith analyzes the impact of national events on local life, exploring themes of political power, land tenure, social stratification, and the role of religion. The study highlights the complex interplay between local agency and broader historical forces, demonstrating how the inhabitants of San José de Gracia navigated and shaped their own destinies within the context of national upheaval.
