This article analyzes a cycle of strikes that took place between 1979 and 1985 in the state of Pernambuco, in Northeast Brazil. These strikes involved 200,000 workers on large sugarcane plantations and resulted in the establishment of collective agreements establishing regulatory standards for working conditions, particularly with regard to wages, housing, and access to a plot of land for subsistence farming. The starting point of the analysis is the distinction between two constitutive moments of the cycle. The first part of the analysis addresses the moment of the strike, its characteristics, the actors involved, and what is at stake for them. The second analyzes the interlude between two strikes, the conflicts that characterize it, and the logic in which they are inscribed. A concluding section points out the effects of this cycle at different scales
