Resumo

This chapter introduces the concept of "transnational projects" as a new perspective for understanding the complex relationship between migration, nation-states, and globalization. Challenging traditional migration studies that focus on assimilation or incorporation into a single nation-state, the authors argue that migrants often engage in projects that transcend national boundaries, creating and maintaining ties to multiple locations. These projects, encompassing economic activities, family reunification, political activism, and cultural expression, reshape the meaning of both homeland and hostland, and challenge the assumed fixity of national identities. The chapter lays the groundwork for the subsequent case studies in the book, which explore the diverse ways in which transnational projects are enacted and experienced by migrants from various backgrounds.
