This article critiques the application of Amazonian-based ontological frameworks, particularly those of Philippe Descola, to Mesoamerican contexts, specifically the eastern Yucatán Peninsula. Bartolomé argues against the simplistic dichotomy between "Indian" or "Amerindian" thought and "Western" thought, viewing such distinctions as rooted in outdated evolutionary assumptions. He challenges the validity of these frameworks even within Amazonian studies, emphasizing the complexity and diversity of indigenous thought systems and cautioning against generalizations across different cultural areas
