This article examines the unique position of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, an organization that exists in a state of being "illegal yet tolerated," blurring the lines between social movement and political party. This precarious status significantly shapes the research relationship, which itself becomes a negotiation between inclusion and exclusion. Beyond the influence of the international context, the Brotherhood's "open secrecy" necessitates a fluctuating management of confidentiality, constantly renegotiating the research relationship. The challenge for the researcher becomes less about achieving the status of "researcher" and more about constructing that status through interaction, continuously redefining the research object itself
