Resumo
This chapter, presented as three nano-essays, delves into the intricate relationship between kinship and magic, exploring how indigenous perspectivism challenges Western anthropological understandings. Viveiros de Castro examines the concept of the "gift" in relation to kinship, arguing that in many indigenous societies, kinship itself is constituted through acts of giving and receiving. He contrasts this with Western notions of kinship based on biological descent and alliance. The chapter also explores the role of magic in mediating relationships, both within and beyond kinship structures, suggesting that magic can be understood as a form of communicative action that establishes connections between humans and non-human agents. Drawing on ethnographic examples, particularly from Amazonian societies, Viveiros de Castro highlights the importance of perspectivism in understanding indigenous ontologies, where the boundaries between human and non-human are fluid and permeable. He argues that magic, in this context, is not a separate domain of practice but is integral to the very fabric of social and cosmological relations.
