Between the last years of the 13th century and the middle of the 15th, the Bordelais region represented a significant stake in the interminable conflict between the Plantagenets, then the Lancasters, and the Valois. A vital sector of English Guyenne, it saw French troops sweep over part of its territory nine times and suffered, in addition to the hardships brought by war, "many other great torments."
