This article examines the interplay between cooperation and rural extension in the Serer region of Senegal. Senegalese socialism, rooted in traditional communal values, rejects both state control and liberalism, promoting instead rural cooperation and extension. The cooperative movement, while state-stimulated and controlled, attracts increasing membership due to its benefits in marketing and resource provision. Rural extension serves as both a prerequisite and complement to cooperation in establishing "contractual socialism." Working with expansion centers, public technical service agents, and extension workers from a groundnut scheme organized by the Society for Technical Aid and Cooperation, the extension system functions as a network of dynamic farmers and an administrative training and support apparatus. A detailed analysis of cooperation, extension, marketing, and resource provision in the Sine-Saloum (Serer region) reveals the uncertainties of Senegalese socialism at the local level, suggesting that traditional mentality may not be as inherently socialist as sometimes portrayed
