Resumo

This chapter explores the complex interplay between biological inheritance and kinship in Madagascar, focusing on how people understand and manipulate ideas of relatedness. It examines the practices surrounding "revealing" and "obscuring" rivers' pedigrees, drawing parallels between the tracing of ancestry in human and river lineages. The chapter argues that while biological connections are acknowledged, they are not the sole determinant of kinship. Social practices, including ritual and marriage, play a crucial role in shaping kinship relations and defining who is considered kin. Furthermore, the chapter highlights the dynamic nature of kinship, demonstrating how individuals can strategically manipulate genealogical connections to achieve social and political goals.
