This article examines the social structure and political behavior of the working class in Marseille during the Second Republic (1848-1851). Sewell analyzes the complex relationship between occupational categories, neighborhood structures, and political affiliations, demonstrating the heterogeneity of the working class and the limitations of simplistic class-based analyses of political behavior. He argues that factors such as occupational instability, residential patterns, and the influence of local notables played a significant role in shaping working-class political choices, often leading to divisions and alliances that defied clear-cut class lines. The study utilizes archival sources, including police records, electoral lists, and newspapers, to reconstruct the social and political landscape of Marseille during this turbulent period
