Resumo

This article examines the social conditions underlying the emergence of urban social movements in advanced capitalist societies. Focusing on 180 urban struggles in the Paris metropolitan area between 1968 and 1973, Castells develops a theoretical framework for analyzing these movements. He classifies the observed struggles and identifies key relationships between them, arguing that urban movements become crucial agents of social change when they contribute to a broader political and ideological hegemony that extends beyond the industrial working class. The study connects the trends in these urban movements to the evolving political landscape in France, particularly the transformation of left-wing strategies, suggesting that the Left must address these movements to advance a democratic path towards socialism.
