This essay examines the rhetorical theory and practice of seventeenth-century Quakers, focusing on the ways in which their peculiar language served as a vehicle for their distinctive theology. It argues that Quaker rhetoric was a rhetoric of the spirit, emphasizing the inner light and rejecting the artificialities of traditional rhetoric. The essay analyzes the rhetorical strategies used by early Quakers in their sermons, pamphlets, and other writings, showing how they sought to persuade through plain speaking, personal testimony, and appeals to conscience
