Resumo
This chapter examines the emergence and development of the Young Kayapó Movement (Movimento Mebengokre Nyre) among the Mentuktire Kayapó, an indigenous group in Brazil. Turner analyzes how this youth-led movement, active from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, challenged traditional leadership structures and advocated for greater autonomy and control over their cultural and political future. He explores the movement's strategies, including the use of video technology to document and disseminate their perspectives, and their engagement with national and international indigenous rights organizations. The chapter highlights the tensions between tradition and modernity, generational differences, and the evolving dynamics of indigenous leadership in the context of globalization and increasing contact with the outside world.
