Resumo
Donald Pierson reviews Robert W. Shirley's book "The End of a Tradition: Culture Change and Development in the Município of Cunha, São Paulo, Brazil." Pierson praises Shirley's detailed ethnographic study of Cunha, focusing on the impact of road construction and increased contact with the outside world on the community's traditional culture and social structure. He highlights Shirley's analysis of the shift from subsistence farming to market-oriented agriculture, the changing roles of men and women, and the decline of traditional religious practices. While appreciating the book's contribution to understanding culture change, Pierson also points out some methodological limitations and questions some of Shirley's interpretations.
