Resumo
Holger Jebens's Pathways to Heaven examines the complex interplay of globalization, modernization, and Christianity in Papua New Guinea. Focusing on the village of Pairundu, Jebens explores the tensions and conflicts arising from the introduction of globalized forms of fundamentalism. The villagers, initially Catholic converts, experienced a charismatic movement before younger generations began converting to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. This shift sparked intergenerational and interfamilial conflict, highlighting the challenges of maintaining traditional beliefs in the face of rapidly spreading global religions. Jebens's ethnographic study provides insights into the social and cultural dynamics that shape religious conflicts on a global scale, demonstrating how local communities negotiate and contest competing religious ideologies.
