Resumo

This article explores the relationship between verbal arts and music among the Kuikuro of the Upper Xingu, Brazil. It examines how memory is shaped and transmitted through these forms of expression, focusing on the dynamic interplay between individual creativity and collective tradition. The authors analyze different genres of Kuikuro verbal art, including myths, narratives, and songs, highlighting their aesthetic qualities and their role in social life. They argue that the Kuikuro's sophisticated mnemonic techniques, combined with their rich musical traditions, contribute to the preservation and transmission of their cultural heritage across generations. The article also discusses the impact of external factors, such as contact with other indigenous groups and Western society, on the evolution of Kuikuro verbal arts and music.
