Resumo
This article examines the role of ritual kinship in Spain, focusing on the compadrazgo system (godparenthood). Pitt-Rivers argues that ritual kinship, particularly compadrazgo, serves to extend social networks and create alliances beyond the immediate family. He analyzes the various forms and functions of compadrazgo in different regions of Spain, highlighting its importance in social organization, economic cooperation, and political influence. The article also explores the relationship between ritual kinship and other forms of social relationships, such as kinship by blood and affinity, and discusses the changing role of compadrazgo in modern Spanish society.
