This article examines the phenomenon of self-taught managers in France, focusing on the experiences of a technician promoted to a technico-commercial management role. Boltanski argues that the rise of these individuals, often lacking formal qualifications, creates tension within the managerial category. The study highlights the individual's initial success followed by a series of disappointments and humiliations as they confront the established norms and expectations of the managerial class. Through these experiences, the self-taught manager becomes aware of their limitations and internalizes the dominant social representation of what constitutes a 'true' manager, ultimately recognizing their own marginal position within the category. This case study serves as a potential paradigm for understanding the broader experiences of self-taught managers and the challenges they face in navigating the social hierarchy of the workplace
