This article examines how historians have studied the political actions of Mexican peasants, arguing that they have often imposed their own frameworks and assumptions onto the evidence. Van Young critiques the tendency to view peasant politics through the lens of modernization theory or Marxist class analysis, suggesting that these approaches obscure the complex and often contradictory motivations of rural communities. He advocates for a more nuanced understanding of peasant politics that takes into account local contexts, cultural values, and individual agency. The article explores several case studies, including the Caste War of Yucatán and the Mexican Revolution, to illustrate how historians can move beyond simplistic interpretations and develop more sophisticated analyses of peasant political behavior
