This article analyzes the rise of the French National Front (FN) in the late 1980s, moving beyond analyses that focus solely on the party's leadership or its voters. Birenbaum and Orfali argue that the FN's success can be attributed to its transformation from a small group of activists (a "minority active") into a social movement. They examine the FN's strategies for mobilizing support, including its exploitation of social anxieties, its use of populist rhetoric, and its construction of a collective identity. The authors also explore the role of local FN branches in building networks and disseminating the party's message. By examining the FN as a social movement, the article provides a more nuanced understanding of its appeal and its impact on French politics
