This paper examines the 'Rigoberta Menchú controversy' as a case study of the problem of truth in educational research. It argues that the controversy exposed a number of important epistemological and ethical issues related to the use of testimonio, ethnographic research, and the representation of marginalized voices. The paper begins by providing a brief overview of the controversy, including the charges of fabrication and misrepresentation leveled against Menchú. It then explores the various ways in which the controversy has been interpreted by scholars in different disciplines. Finally, the paper offers some reflections on the implications of the controversy for educational research, arguing that it highlights the need for greater critical awareness of the ways in which knowledge is produced and disseminated
