Resumo
Evon Z. Vogt's Zinacantan: A Maya Community in the Highlands of Chiapas is a comprehensive ethnographic study of the Tzotzil-speaking Maya community of Zinacantan, located in the Chiapas highlands of Mexico. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted over several decades, Vogt provides a detailed account of Zinacantan's social organization, religious beliefs and practices, economic system, and political structure. The book explores the complex interplay between traditional Maya customs and the influences of Mexican national culture and the Catholic Church. Vogt examines the cargo system, a unique form of rotating political and religious leadership, and its role in maintaining social cohesion. He also delves into the intricacies of Zinacantan's religious worldview, focusing on the importance of ancestor veneration, the ritual calendar, and the role of shamans in mediating between the human and supernatural realms. The book offers valuable insights into the dynamics of cultural change and adaptation in an indigenous community facing the pressures of modernization.
