In this Aquinas Lecture, Evans-Pritchard addresses the historically hostile relationship between sociology (and social anthropology in particular) and religious faith. He begins by reflecting on Eliza Lynn Linton's novel, The True History of Joshua Davidson, which portrays Jesus returning to 19th-century England and confronting the social and political realities of the time. Linton's assertion that Jesus's teachings contradict the "unchangeable Law" of sociology prompts Evans-Pritchard to examine the prevailing sociological perspectives on religion. He traces the development of social science back to Montesquieu's L'Esprit des Lois, highlighting the search for laws governing social life. The lecture serves as a platform for discussing the complex interplay between sociological analysis and religious belief
