Resumo

This chapter analyzes the over-dimensioning of the category of heritage, demonstrating how it has become key in public policies for cultural preservation. To highlight the historicity of the meanings of heritage, it analyzes institutional concepts and practices of cultural heritage and folklore in Brazil, contrasting dictionary definitions of heritage and folklore. It then formulates hypotheses about the omnipresence of the heritage category, considering UNESCO's role. The analysis points out anachronisms in historiography regarding the division between material and immaterial heritage and demonstrates how an integrated conception of heritage can reveal diverse meanings and narratives, promoting a decolonial approach to heritage that aligns with the field of rights.
