This article examines the complex process by which Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's retelling of an Ojibwe story, "Gitshee Gauzinee," transformed from an oral tale into a literary piece disseminated internationally. Bauman traces how Schoolcraft adapted and framed the story to fit within a broader project of national and cultural identity formation in the United States. He analyzes how Schoolcraft's version emphasized themes of assimilation and progress, reflecting the dominant ideology of his time. The article also explores how the story, through its inclusion in various publications and translations, gained international recognition, contributing to the construction of a globalized image of Native American folklore. Bauman argues that Schoolcraft's interventions, while contributing to the preservation and dissemination of the story, also significantly altered its original meaning and context, highlighting the power dynamics inherent in the collection and representation of folklore
