This article examines the complex relationship between Claude Lévi-Strauss's structuralist anthropology and the concept of the nation-state. Herzfeld argues that while Lévi-Strauss's work often transcends national boundaries and focuses on universal structures of the human mind, it also reveals implicit engagements with French national identity and the political context of post-war France. The article explores how Lévi-Strauss's anthropological project, particularly his studies of kinship and myth, can be interpreted as a response to the challenges of national identity and cultural diversity in the modern world. It highlights the tension between universalism and particularism in Lévi-Strauss's thought, suggesting that his structuralism, while aiming for universal applicability, is inevitably shaped by the specific historical and cultural circumstances of its production
