Resumo
This chapter explores the complex relationship between language and religion, arguing that language is not merely a tool for expressing religious beliefs but is constitutive of religious experience itself. Keane examines how specific linguistic practices, such as prayer, ritual language, and theological discourse, shape religious subjects and communities. He emphasizes the performative nature of religious language, highlighting how its use creates and reinforces social and moral orders. Drawing on ethnographic examples from diverse religious traditions, the chapter demonstrates how linguistic analysis can illuminate the ways in which language mediates religious experience, constructs religious identities, and shapes the relationship between the sacred and the profane. Keane also discusses the challenges of translating religious language and the role of language in religious conflict and change.
