Resumo
This introductory chapter to "Historical Teleologies in the Modern World" explores the complex relationship between teleology and history, focusing on the transformations of Enlightenment teleological thinking during the nineteenth century. The authors argue that while the Enlightenment posited a universal, linear historical trajectory, the nineteenth century witnessed a diversification of teleological frameworks. They examine how various intellectual and political movements, including romanticism, historicism, and nationalism, adapted and challenged Enlightenment teleology, leading to the emergence of competing and sometimes conflicting historical narratives. The chapter sets the stage for the subsequent explorations of specific teleological frameworks in diverse cultural and geographical contexts presented in the book.
