Resumo

This chapter explores the methodological and ethical challenges of conducting ethnographic research on gay communities in urban North America. Reflecting on her own fieldwork in the 1980s, Rubin discusses the complexities of gaining access, building trust, and representing the lives of marginalized groups. She examines the power dynamics inherent in the researcher-subject relationship and advocates for a collaborative approach that prioritizes the voices and perspectives of the community being studied. Rubin also highlights the importance of understanding the historical and political context in which these communities exist, particularly the impact of the AIDS epidemic and the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights. The chapter concludes with a call for more nuanced and ethical ethnographic research that can contribute to a deeper understanding of sexual subcultures and promote social justice.
