Resumo
This article reflects on the intellectual and political circumstances surrounding the publication of Gayle Rubin's influential 1984 essay "Thinking Sex: Notes for a Radical Theory of the Politics of Sexuality." Rubin revisits the context of the feminist "sex wars" of the late 1970s and early 1980s, providing a detailed account of key events, publications, and debates that shaped the reception of her work. She analyzes the impact of anti-pornography feminism and its entanglement with the New Right, exploring the challenges faced by those advocating for a more nuanced understanding of sexuality. The article also examines the relationship between this period in feminist history and the subsequent development of LGBTQ and queer scholarship, highlighting the lasting influence of "Thinking Sex" on these fields.
