Resumo
This preface to the 1963 English translation of "Structural Anthropology" reflects on the development and reception of structuralism in anthropology. Lévi-Strauss addresses criticisms and misunderstandings of his work, emphasizing the scientific aims of structuralism and its focus on uncovering universal mental structures underlying cultural diversity. He clarifies the relationship between structuralism and other intellectual currents, such as Saussurean linguistics and Gestalt psychology, and discusses the methodological challenges of applying structural analysis to complex social phenomena. The preface also highlights the importance of cross-cultural comparison and the potential of structuralism to contribute to a deeper understanding of human nature.
