Resumo
This chapter examines the relationship between emotions and judgments of value. Nussbaum argues against the Stoic view that emotions are simply false judgments, proposing instead that emotions themselves contain an evaluative component. She explores the idea that emotions are 'geological formations' of judgments, layered and complex, reflecting our values and attachments. Nussbaum uses the example of grief to illustrate how emotions can be rational, even when painful, as they reveal what we hold dear. She emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and understanding the evaluative content of emotions, rather than dismissing them as irrational or disruptive.
