Resumo
This paper presents a formal semantic analysis of Pawnee kinship terminology, demonstrating how a seemingly complex and irregular system can be understood through a set of underlying rules and principles. Lounsbury utilizes componential analysis, a structuralist approach, to break down kinship terms into their constituent semantic features, such as generation, sex, and lineality. He argues that the Pawnee system, despite its surface variations, reflects a consistent and logical structure based on these features. The analysis reveals how specific combinations of these features generate the various kinship terms and explains the observed patterns of usage. This work is a significant contribution to kinship studies and anthropological linguistics, showcasing the power of formal methods in understanding cultural systems.
