This article examines the diverse representations of the Alhambra palace in the nineteenth-century Ottoman world. Rather than viewing the Alhambra as a purely "Spanish" or "Moorish" monument, McSweeney explores how Ottoman writers, artists, and travelers engaged with the palace as a shared Islamic heritage site. Through analysis of travelogues, architectural treatises, and visual depictions, the article reveals how Ottoman interpretations of the Alhambra reflected broader intellectual and political currents within the Ottoman Empire, including debates about architectural style, historical memory, and the relationship between Islam and the West. The Alhambra served as a lens through which Ottomans grappled with their own imperial identity and their place within a rapidly changing global landscape
