Drawing on an anthropological approach in dialogue with queer theory, this article analyzes three conjugal experiences involving transvestites who engage in prostitution. It discusses the limits of these relationships, imposed by the worldview that guides the transvestites, who mostly belong to the lower classes and, according to the hypothesis presented, are tributaries of a holistic worldview. Thus, it is observed that conjugal relationships are strongly guided by essentialist perspectives regarding sex and gender, assigning rigidly established roles for each partner. By naturalizing sex, which demands a gender supposedly coherent with an anatomy they simply do not accept as destiny, they remain tied to the heteronormative matrix. Informed by a grammar of heterosexual conjugality, they find it difficult to elaborate another lexicon for conjugal relationships
