Resumo

In The Civil Contract of Photography, Ariella Azoulay argues that photography's invention was not a technological event but the institution of a new form of political relationship. Photography, she contends, created a new civil contract between individuals regardless of their status, generating a space of appearance and a sense of shared worldliness. Azoulay traces this civil contract from the earliest days of photography in the mid-nineteenth century to contemporary uses of the medium, examining how photography has shaped political events, social movements, and our understanding of history. She analyzes a wide range of photographs, from iconic images to vernacular snapshots, to demonstrate how the medium has empowered individuals and communities to claim their place in the world and challenge existing power structures. The book challenges conventional histories of photography that focus on technological advancements and aesthetic innovations, offering instead a groundbreaking account of photography's political and ethical dimensions.
