Resumo

In "This Stifling Noonday," Achille Mbembe revisits and expands upon his concept of necropolitics, exploring how contemporary forms of power operate through the subjugation and control of life itself. He examines the ways in which sovereignty is exercised through the infliction of death and the production of states of exception, focusing on the racialized and colonial dimensions of these processes. Mbembe analyzes the historical and philosophical underpinnings of necropolitics, drawing on thinkers such as Foucault, Agamben, and Fanon, and connects these theoretical frameworks to contemporary phenomena such as drone warfare, border control, and the management of migration. He argues that necropolitics is not simply about the power to kill, but also about the power to dictate who lives and how they live, creating a hierarchy of life and death that reinforces existing inequalities.
