Resumo
This short piece reflects on Nikolas Rose's influential 1990 book, *Governing the Soul: The Shaping of the Private Self*. Rose revisits the book's key arguments about the rise of "psy" disciplines and their role in shaping subjectivity and governing conduct in contemporary societies. He discusses how the book anticipated the increasing individualization and responsibilization characteristic of neoliberal governance, and how the "technologies of the self" it analyzed have become even more pervasive in the intervening decades. Rose also considers some of the criticisms leveled against the book and suggests directions for future research on the government of subjectivity.
