Resumo

This article challenges the traditional view of Joseph Stalin as a charismatic leader who cultivated a “cult of personality” through manipulation and propaganda. Instead, it argues that Stalin employed the “cult” as a legitimation technique to consolidate his power within the Soviet political system. By analyzing Stalin's speeches, writings, and actions, the authors demonstrate how he strategically used the “cult” to construct an image of himself as a competent and indispensable leader, thereby justifying his policies and suppressing dissent. The article concludes that the “cult of personality” was not simply a product of Stalin's individual charisma, but rather a complex political strategy that played a crucial role in the consolidation of his totalitarian regime.
